In case you missed it, Germany-based drone company Quantum Systems is making some serious money moves.
Just two weeks after raising €180M at a cool €3B, the company announced yesterday that it’s launching a joint initiative with Ukrainian company Frontline Robotics called “Quantum Frontline Industries.”
The mash-up—part of a defense cooperation initiative formally launched during President Zelenskyy’s visit to Berlin yesterday—will “mass-produce battlefield-proven multi-use drones developed by the Ukrainian company Frontline Robotics.”
“Ukrainians have revolutionized the drone war, now we will revolutionize the industrial war together. For Quantum Systems, this is the logical next step of our proven track record in support of Ukraine,” Quantum Systems CEO Sven Kruck said in a statement.
Last we checked, Frontline definitely makes weapons systems…could this be the end of Quantum’s no-boom-boom era?
Got your back: Germany has been no slouch in terms of support for Ukraine, but Berlin really doubled down yesterday. As Zelenskyy arrived in the country to meet with everyone’s favorite Trump advisors, Chancellor Friedrich Merz unveiled a 10-point plan to increase defense cooperation with Kyiv.
Here’s some of what the plan calls for:
- High-level coordination between leaders to align arms production policy and a coordination office in Berlin called “Ukraine Freedom House.”
- Building drones in Germany for use in Ukraine (looking at you, Quantum).
- Expanding joint production and procurement of defense equipment.
- Coordination to increase procurement of Ukrainian tech by European allies.
- Potential investment guarantees for German weapons companies that work in Ukraine.
The document stipulates that “a strong Ukrainian defense industry is crucial for defense against Russia’s war of aggression and is an important element of security guarantees to deter future Russian aggression.”
Locked in: And Quantum Systems is way the f on board. The company has basically offered up its production capacity to Frontline to churn out drones for Ukraine on an “industrial scale.”
“The production line will combine Ukrainian battlefield-proven technology with German industrial automation, creating a new model of cross-border defence co-production: the German Model,” Quantum Systems said in a statement.
- Frontline will provide “licensed designs, training, and full lifecycle support in line with NATO standards,” while QS will provide the industrial muscle.
- 100 percent of the drones produced will go to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
- The companies say this is “Europe’s first fully automated, industrial-scale foreign production line for drones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Holding hands: Frontline is no stranger to European partnerships. Earlier this year, the Ukrainian company—backed by D3 Ventures and Brave1, among other investors—teamed up with ARX Robotics to build “Combat Gereon,” a battle-hardened, autonomous baby tank.
Plus, their own kit—including multi-role FPV and ISR drones—is deployed widely across the Ukrainian front line. The company says more than 60 different units use its drones.
“Our drones are essential and in high demand on the frontline in Ukraine, which is why we need to scale up serial production,” Frontline Chief BD Officer Mykyta Rozhkov said in a statement. “In wartime, finding safe locations for manufacturing inside Ukraine is difficult. Partnering with Quantum Systems allows us to expand our production capacity and strengthen the Defense Forces even further.”
